Preventative Medicine

Vaccinations and checkups:

We recommend a course of three vaccinations for puppies and kittens starting at 6 weeks of age. Puppies are vaccinated against Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvo virus and two strains of canine cough.

Kittens are vaccinated against feline enteritis and two strains of cat flu (Herpes virus and Calici virus). For cats that will be going outdoors, we also recommend feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) vaccination. This virus is transmitted via cat bites from infected cats, and is commonly referred to as cat AIDS.

After the course of puppy and kitten vaccinations, we advise yearly vaccinations and health checks. Regular visits allow us to perform a thorough physical examination and discuss diet, dental hygiene, parasite control, behavioral issues and any other concerns that you may have.

Senior health Checks

Unfortunately our furry friends age a lot faster than we do. In fact one dog or cat year is equivalent to 4-7 human years.

As our pets age, the likelihood of chronic disease increases greatly, just as it does in humans.

Chronic renal failure, diabetes, cancer, heart disease and dental disease are just a few examples.

Because animals are very good at hiding chronic illness and pain, chronic disease is often not diagnosed until quite late. Treatment then can be very challenging and less successful.

This is why we recommend senior health checks at 6 monthly intervals between yearly vaccinations for dogs and cats over 7 or 8 years old.

As part of our senior health check, we recommend a urine analysis and a blood profile in addition to a thorough physical examination.

House Calls

We understand there are situations where bringing your pet to the vet clinic can be difficult.

You can organise for one of our friendly vets to make a visit to your home for services such as vaccinations and treatment for minor ailments.

Unfortunately, we are limited in what we can do for your pet at your home if the condition is more serious. For your convenience, we can bring your pet back to the clinic for diagnostics and more intensive treatment.

We also understand putting your pet to sleep is a difficult and stressful time. Therefore we provide euthanasia in the comfort of your own home.

There are additional fees to have a veterinarian come out to your home. Please phone 97991479 for more details.

Micro chipping

Micro chipping is the most secure form of pet identification and is mandatory for all newly registered dogs and cats with the City of Casey. An encapsulated transponder about the size of the grain of rice is implanted beneath the skin, which when scanned emits a unit number. This unit number is used to identify animal’s owner and retrieve their contact details.

Surgery and Anesthesia

surgeryA high standard of surgical expertise is available at Pound Road Veterinary Clinic. We perform a wide range of surgical procedures from removing tumors to bone plating and application of external fixatives for fracture repair.

Our surgery is fully equipped with state of the art surgical and anesthetic monitoring equipment. Each patient is monitored closely by our experienced nurses.

We recommend intravenous fluid therapy during surgery to maintain good blood pressure and to help flush anesthetic agents out of the body as quickly as possible. This greatly accelerates the pet’s recovery from general anesthetic.

We aim to keep all patients comfortable at all times. We provide heating pads during and after surgery to keep your pets feeling warm and fuzzy. We also provide them with plenty of pain relief before and after surgery and will often send your pet’s home with pain killers after the surgery.

There are several advantages in de-sexing your pet.

Statistically de-sexed pets live around 20% longer than entire pets. This is because de-sexing greatly reduces the likelihood of pets developing various types of cancer and infections. These conditions can be life-threatening and expensive to treat.

De-sexing reduces roaming during which time injury and unwanted pregnancies are likely to occur. Therefore having your pet de-sexed will almost certainly reduce veterinary bills.

De-sexing is a safe procedure that is performed under general anesthetic. We recommend having your pet de-sexed at 6 months of age.

Your pet will need to stay with us for the day and will go home the same evening. All of our patients are given pain relief before and after surgery to ensure they are comfortable. Unless clients request otherwise all pets will have a tattoo applied to the left ear to signify they have been de-sexed.

Male cats will not have sutures, female cats and all dogs will require sutures. We will remove them 2 weeks post surgery at no charge.

Included in our price is a bottle of bitterant which can be applied around the sutures to prevent licking.

Our staffs are always happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have regarding this procedure.

Please refer to the surgical tab for more information on our surgery protocols.

Dental Care

The facts you should know about dental disease

Unfortunately dogs and cats cannot brush their own teeth like we do.

  • By the age of 3 years 70% of cats and dogs will have the beginning of periodontal disease
  • This disease frequently goes unnoticed by pet owners
  • Dental disease does not only affect the mouth but can cause serious issues in other parts of the body
  • Your pet may be suffering from pain, especially when eating, although they may not be apparent to you

There are some cases where owner will notice signs and symptoms such as smelly breath, salivating, decreased appetite or a depressed demeanour.

The good news is that our staff are always willing to offer free advice on dental care ranging from prevention to treatment. We also have a variety of pet foods and specially designed treats to aid in the prevention of the disease.

As a treatment we offer comprehensive dental care using the latest ultrasonic scaling and polishing equipment.

Pound Road Veterinary clinic is well equipped with a large range of diagnostic tools to help us achieve the best outcomes for you and your pet.

Our state-of-the-art equipment included ultrasound, electrocardiogram (ECG), and digital radiography to give us a clear picture of what is going on inside your pet’s body.

We also have an endoscope that enables us to look into your pet’s gastrointestinal tract and take biopsies if needed.

We can perform some in-house blood and urine tests, but we also make use of external laboratories with specialist equipment and expert advice.

Pound Road Veterinary Clinic has a microscope on site which enables us to examine various tissues and body fluids under heavy magnification. This allows us to diagnose conditions such as ear and skin infections while your pet is here in consultation.
